School Visits

dixonDixon Elementary School, Richmond

I am available for visits to schools throughout Vancouver and the lower mainland. I can also schedule visits to schools on Vancouver Island. Classroom workshops include (but are not limited to) the following:

Inside “The Kingdom of Strange”
For Grades: 8-12
Time needed: 90 minutes

  • Readings from my new book (20 minutes).
  • Q&A with students about the book and its origins, my inspiration, the characters, setting and langage (40 minutes).
  • “Drafts”: what can you learn about writing and publishing, from the paper trail I’ve brought along? I have copies of my book in novel files, dating from early drafts to final versions; I share correspondence with my editor, publicity inquiries and early submissions to agents. Students are challenged to consider the many kinds of writing an author has to do, in addition to the work of creating fiction (30 minutes).

Poetry in person
For Grades: 8-12
Time needed: 90 minutes

  • Readings of my poetry, published/broadcast and unpublished (20 minutes)
  • A poetry activity in which I present the students with six of my poems and ask them which – in their opinion – has been published and why (50 minutes)
  • I read the published poem to them after a short discussion and explain how and why it was published (20 minutes)

The writing life
For Grades: 8-12
Time needed: 90 minutes

  • Q&A with students from Grades 8 to 12 about the life of a professional writer (30 minutes)
  • What does it take to write a book? What does it take to finish and publish it? What kind of help do you need and who can you expect to work with along the way? (30 minutes)
  • Writing as work: what are the joys and pitfalls of combining the writing life with other work? How much can you really earn as a writer? Can you ever quit your day job? (30 minutes)
